An influential African climate advocacy group has sharply criticized former US President Donald Trump following his comments at the United Nations General Assembly dismissing climate change as “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world”.
Trump also referred to concerns over carbon emissions as “a hoax”, drawing condemnation from the Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), a leading coalition of African civil society organizations focused on climate policy.
Describing the remarks as “reckless”, PACJA said the statements ignore both scientific consensus and the lived experiences of millions on the African continent.
“For millions of Africans, climate change is not a debate. It is a daily reality,” said Dr Mithika Mwenda, Executive Director of PACJA.
‘Africa on the Front Line of the Climate Crisis’
Dr Mwenda pointed to a range of extreme weather events already affecting the continent from prolonged drought in the Horn of Africa to devastating cyclones in Mozambique and widespread flooding across West Africa.
“Africa contributes the least to global emissions, yet it suffers the most severe consequences,” he said. “When powerful leaders mock the climate emergency, they weaken the global solidarity urgently needed to protect lives and livelihoods.”
The group argues that rhetoric such as Trump’s risks fueling climate denial, delaying action, and shifting attention away from the responsibility of high-emitting nations to take the lead on cutting greenhouse gases.
In a strongly worded statement, PACJA said denying climate change amounts to “an insult to the children who go to bed hungry after crops fail, to the women walking further for water, and to young Africans whose futures are increasingly uncertain.”
Call for Global Leadership
PACJA is calling on world leaders to reject all forms of climate denial and recommit to evidence-based action on the climate crisis. The organization also emphasized that the 2015 Paris Agreement is grounded in science and fairness — not political ideology.
“Addressing climate change is not charity it is justice,” the group said.
PACJA urged the international community, including the United Nations and civil society organizations, to reaffirm their commitment to climate action and to confront misinformation that could undermine progress.
The alliance said it will continue to mobilize communities across Africa to ensure global momentum on climate action is not derailed by what it calls “dangerous rhetoric, regardless of the speaker’s influence.”
